Reasons For Upgrade
Subscription Television
Unit holders have voiced the wish to enjoy the benefits of pay television.
For those unit holders looking at investment - it may mean an increase in property
value. For those unit holders who are also occupiers, it may mean an increase
in lifestyle benefit. There are various providers of subscription television
in Australia.
Foxtel
- Provides a subscription service by means of cable, satellite or microwave
transmission. The nature of the transmission type also limits the type and
variety of products that can be offered. (For example, the microwave service
has substantially less channels available).
Optus Television
- Provides a subscription service by means of cable. The cable for this service
is present in Pitt Street (but not Philip Street). Prior to their period
of ownership by Cable & Wireless they connected many multi-unit dwellings
to their network. They are now owned by Singtel and have started a more aggressive “cable
products” marketing campaign, including from November 2002, redistributing
all Foxtel channels.
Satellite
- Various other companies provide limited subscription (or free) television
services via satellite, including CNN and Indonesian Television.
Broadband Internet Connection
Broadband internet is about how fast you can connect to the internet. There
are two main components; Up-stream and Down-stream. These refer to communications
from your computer to your ISP (Internet service Provider) and communications
from your ISP to your computer. They are measured in KBPS (KiloBytes Per
Second).
BigPond
-This company is a division of Telstra and provides various broadband connections.
Firstly there is T2 connection, which is direct connection to optical fibre
(used by big businesses in the CBD, where the optical fibre network is located).
Secondly there is Cable Broadband which uses the Foxtel cable system (this
offers high speed both up & down stream).
Thirdly there is Satellite Broadband which offers quick down-stream but uses
a conventional (slow) phone line for up-stream communication.
Fourthly there is ADSL (& ISDN), which use the existing telephony connection
(the copper wire twisted pairs mentioned earlier) to provide fast service.
Each of these services come with different specifications of speed,
download quantity, reliability and price.
